I don’t mean to be rude but IEEE has done it this time. I was wondering why their publication styles are so typographically ugly but at least that could be justified. Now, they’ve come up with a “new” computer.org home page and … well, just take a look at it:
http://www2.computer.org/portal/web/guest
That’s what bachelor’s students design when they’re learning FrontPage! Sheesh!
yup, it sure is front page or a clone. Sucks big time.

Today is Eid and I suggest that everyone should secure mutton for our 3rd and/or 4th day’s partying. Going to village today and most probably will be back tomorrow afternoon.

I’m Lee, aka The Opinionated Webguy, and I manage the little staff team for the computer.org web presence. I welcome constructive comments on how to improve the site. We have a web development community area, and it is free to register. We’ve also blogged our way through the entire process so far, so you can see why we’ve chosen what we have, and help us do better.
Just in passing
- No, we didn’t use FrontPage (or its current incarnation Expression Web) Our front page passes strict validation by the w3c validator – I’ve never seen MS generated code do that. I still keep trying to find the best editor for me — for the moment, I actually prefer the HTML code generated by FCKEditor above most other ones, so I typically either use that, or do it by hand in a text only editor.
- The old site was hosted on Windows using a Gauss CMS and Vignette frontend. The new site is hosted using an open-source stack. We’re running Xen virtual servers on Ubuntu Linux. We’re using Alfresco for the CMS, Liferay for the portal, CAS for authentication, etc.
-I acknowledge there are a ton of issues with the new site. One big one is the size of the JavaScript package that gets downloaded on first coming to the site. We’re working on ways to reduce the initial hit coming from using Liferay.
-There are actually three different homepages for the new site, so you can choose between them. The first you’ve seen. The second is a search based ultra simplistic homepage. The third is a custom homepage, where you can choose exactly what goes on it, including Google gadgets.
Again – come on by. I ***WELCOME*** dialog about how to make it better.
